Apples to Oranges, Entertainers to Disc Jockeys |

Ok, I’m just going to go ahead and say it, I hate the term “DJ” when referring to an entertainer for a special event. When I think of a DJ, it reminds me of a young, inexperienced guy willing to work for tips and beer at your local restaurant turned late nightclub. Don’t misread me, for a rocking Thursday night on the town there is nothing better, but a DJ is the LAST thing you want at your wedding.
What you are looking for is an Entertainer and there is a BIG difference. So what’s the difference between a Professional Entertainer and a Disc Jockey?? I’ve put together a checklist for you to use to evaluate your entertainer and his company, to see if he is worth the extra bucks because there are no “do-over” on the biggest day of your life.
- Does his company come recommended from other professional vendors & the venue you are working with for your wedding?
- Does he have an online reception planner and music list for you to review?
- Have you spoken to the individual that will be at your wedding?
- Does he portray the confidence needed to take charge of an event and make sure it flows as you have requested?
- Have past brides commented on his ability to read and successfully work with guests?
- Do you feel that he understands your vision of the wedding?
- Does he work for a company that designates an entertainment consultant to help you with planning and music selection?
- Is he using the latest technology of pro audio equipment and does understands the importance of presentation?
- Can you view his music selection when you meet him and is it edited?
- Is he comfortable making announcements and is he willing to give you some examples intros and announcements?
- Does he guarantee your event with a signed contract?
- Is his company licensed and insured which is a requirement from many venues?
- Does his company have an office?
- Does his contract state that if he is unavailable for any reason, there will be guaranteed replacement ready for you?
If you are seriously in the market to find entertainment on the biggest day of your life, you should seriously consider finding an entertainer. I don’t suggest bands if you are on a budget due to their cost, but the savings you get from a quality entertainer over a DJ is well worth the extra money spent!
